FROM EASY-GOING

to challenging treks

Pack your hiking backpack, get your hiking boots on and fully immerse yourself in the unspoiled nature of the Murau region! Rising to altitudes of between 700 and 2,800 metres, the southern Tauern mountains allow hikers to experience a unique combination of picturesque and green mountain landscapes with 40 crystal-clear natural bathing lakes and unending adventure. The Kreischberg, the Lachtal and the Turracher Höhe can be reached on foot or with the summer gondola, while the chairlift will take you up the Grebenzen or to the mountain station in Lachtal. Take a comfortable walk up the Frauenalpe and the Zirbitzkogel, or set yourself a sporting challenge by ascending the mighty Preber. The mountains and forests in Austria's most richly wooded region offer both unforgettable and soothing hiking experiences. There’s only one way to discover the feeling when natural scenery, fresh mountain air and breathtaking views all combine, and that’s to hike through Murau, a region filled with experience and adventure.

Mountains and tours

Experience the region

Part of the southern Tauern mountains, the Murauer Range offers visitors "eight mountain personalities", a superb natural experience. The aromatic scent of pine leads hikers from the Preber to the Turracher Höhe and from the Lachtalzinken and Kreischberg to the Zirbitzkogel Grebenzen Nature Park. Magnificent views, deep blue mountain lakes and alpine landscapes await you, as do homely huts set within green meadows and forests.

Nothing is more touching than the untouched nature to be found on the Murauer alpine paths. Must-sees include the eight-peak mountain path, the Krakauer Höhensteig and the Alpine peaks of the Lachtal.

Enjoy walking from the ‘Glacier to the Wine’, the gentle long-distance path that leads walkers into wine country, via the southern route from idyllic Krakau with its natural monument, the Günster Waterfall, to St. Peter am Kammersberg.

Rediscover the wonders of the natural world on the long-distance Via Natura path. Its emphasis is on "reading nature”, and allows you to enter a state of deep relaxation thanks to its romantic ponds, mystical moors and the natural jewels nestled within the park.
